The grapes come from the parcel Finca La María, located in La Horra within the privileged triangle of Roa, Anguix, and La Horra in D.O. Ribera del Duero. The vineyard was planted in 1994 on calcareous soils with sandy gravels over clay-limestone; these profiles, rich in limestone and well-drained, favour complex ripening and small-sized bunches with low vigour.
The climate of the area, sometimes extreme, adds temperature range that helps preserve acidity and develop aromas; harvest takes place in early October and viticulture is focused on respecting the terroir through clonal selection and sustainable, organic practices that aim to express the personality of the vineyard. Varieties used: 100% Tempranillo. The winemaking process begins with selective grape harvesting and rapid transfer to the winery to preserve the fruit; the wine from the parcel undergoes a 12-month ageing in French oak Bordeaux barrels, followed by a 6-month resting period in the bottle rack, which adds structure and aromatic nuances without masking the freshness and youthful character of the Tempranillo.
The wine displays a cherry red colour, floral and spicy notes on the nose, and a smooth attack on the palate with ripe fruit and pleasant tannins, reflecting the balance between wood and fruit. It is produced by Bodegas Marqués de Velilla, a project born from the Hernández de Mercado family and based in La Horra, in the historic heart of Ribera del Duero. The winery, founded by the family and enhanced with modern technology, manages extensive estates and over 150 hectares of own vineyards integrated into a Mediterranean mountain of 800 hectares; its philosophy prioritises respect for the terroir, parcel analysis, and a sustainable viticulture approach—decisions that are reflected in the wine’s fidelity to the personality of the parcel.
On the table, Finca La María pairs well with red meats and roasts, light game stews, spiced dishes, and cured cheeses; it also complements hearty soups and tasty rice dishes, where its ripe fruit and rounded tannins provide contrast, and its spicy character enhances sauces and seasonings.
Appearance: Cherry red, clear and bright.
Nose: Floral and spicy, balanced and elegant.
Palate: Smooth attack; ripe and spicy fruit prevails with pleasant, non-aggressive tannins.
