Here’s introducing Finca El Empecinado Crianza 2019 – a Tempranillo from an Excellent year created from grapes selected from high-lying plots. Full on the palate with sweet tannins, notes of ripe fruit, dairy, cocoa and vanilla, and a long finish.

General Information
Finca El Empecinado Crianza 2019 is designed wholly from Tempranillo grapes from a selection of plots totalling 40 hectares in area, planted with vines that are 20 years old on average and lie at an altitude of between 800 and 920 metres. It’s been aged for 13 months in American and French oak barrels.
The previous vintage, that of 2018, won a double gold at Gilbert & Gaillard 2023 and a gold medal at the Berliner Wine Trophy 2023. Its name is a tribute to Spanish military man Juan Martín Díez, known as ‘El Empecinado’ (meaning ‘stubborn’), a native of Castrillo de Duero (where the winery is located) who went down in history as a hero of the Peninsular War.
Bodegas y Viñedos Vega Real is the pet winery of Barbadillo, a historic firm established in 1821 by the Barbadillo family that began making Manzanilla and Fino wines and is now a group with a strong international presence. Originally from Burgos, the Barbadillo family fulfilled their dream of creating a winery there with Vega Real.
Bodegas y Viñedos Vega Real started out in 1997. This medium-sized/small winery is based in Castrillo del Duero, very close to Peñafiel, in the part of Ribera del Duero located in Valladolid, beside a meander in the river Duero and surrounded by century-old black poplars. Vega Real has brought back artisanal winemaking methods and is renowned for its scrupulous management of the vineyards, which are perfectly identified. It has 80 hectares of its own and also works with vineyards belonging to the best grape growers in the area. It produces the Vega Real Roble, El Empecinado and Vaccayos brands.
Finca El Empecinado Crianza 2019 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is fantastic with lamb chops with roast peppers.
Creators' opinion
Appearance: Wine with intense pigmentation, black-cherry colour with red-cherry and slightly bluish-purple hues at the edge.
Nose: Ripe red fruit, subtle dairy aromas. Very good intensity. Background notes of vanilla, cocoa and smoke.
Palate: mouth-filling, very sweet tannins. Ripe fruit, dairy notes. Very well-balanced acidity. Cocoa, vanilla. Long finish.
