A few years ago, the Pérez Cuevas family from Rioja, creators of Bodegas Ontañón, set their sights on Ribera del Duero, the Spanish designation of origin that has been in vogue since its establishment in 1982. Their success was almost instant. Based in Fuentecén (Burgos) under the name Rippa Dorii, they produce powerful yet elegant and structured wines. A great example of this is the Dominio de la Abadesa Reserva 2021, exclusively crafted for Vinoselección from a vintage rated as Excellent.

After making history in Rioja, the fourth generation of the Pérez Cuevas family has managed to conquer Ribera del Duero by applying their philosophy, based on authenticity, respect for tradition, and, above all, making the most of the old tempranillo vines owned by the winery in Fuentecén, in the province of Burgos. This is where the exclusive Dominio de la Abadesa Reserva 2021, the most elegant wine of the winery, is born.
This single-varietal tempranillo comes from a vintage classified as Excellent in the denomination of origin. It undergoes 24 months of aging in 225-liter American and French oak barrels and stands out for its elegance and complexity. It is made from selected grapes from old vines located above 900 meters in altitude and rooted in clay soils, which provide elegant and structured wines, as the maturation cycles are longer, resulting in a higher polyphenolic content. The temperature differences between day and night during the summer period help to make this maturation even slower, contributing to a high concentration of color and tannins. Additionally, the vintage was classified as Excellent.
The Pérez Cuevas family is one of the most emblematic in Rioja. As pioneers of the historic Ontañón brand, they have successfully expanded into other denominations of origin. Rippa Dorii is the name of their winery in the D.O. Ribera del Duero. In fact, it is the Latin name of this historic region. Based in Fuentecén (Burgos), it is characterized by the balance between fruit and wood achieved in their wines.
Dominio de la Abadesa Reserva 2021 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) will be the perfect companion for a stone-grilled aged beef steak or Granja-style large white beans.
Ontañón is a historic Spanish wine brand. Forged in the 1980s by the Pérez Cuevas family, it represents the passion of small artisan winemakers. Today, led by the fifth generation of the family, it is a rejuvenated and thriving brand with a strong presence in the national market. This family is also the creator of Bodegas Queirón in Rioja Oriental, a winery focused on meticulously crafted small productions. Additionally, they have expanded their activities to other denominations such as Ribera del Duero, where they oversee the ambitious project Rippa Dorii, previously known as Altos de Ontañón.
Rippa Dorii – which means Ribera del Duero in Latin – is based in Fuentecén (Burgos). It works with over 300 hectares of vineyards, some of which are located in the province of Soria, and its wines are characterized by a balance between fruit and oak.
