A few years ago the Pérez Cuevas family from Rioja, the founders of Bodegas Ontañón, turned their attention to Ribera del Duero, the Spanish Denominación de Origen that had been fashionable since its creation in 1982. It was an almost instant success. Established in Fuentecén (Burgos) with the name Rippa Dorii, it makes potent yet elegant and structured wines. A good example is this Dominio de la Abadesa Reserva 2020, designed exclusively for Vinoselección from a vintage with an Excellent rating.

General Information

After going down history in Rioja, the fourth generation of the Pérez Cuevas family successfully expanded into Ribera del Duero, applying their philosophy based on authenticity, respect for tradition and above all on extracting all the flavours from the old Tempranillo vines the firm owns in Fuentecén, in the province of Burgos. There it made the exclusive Dominio de la Abadesa Reserva 2020, the firm’s most elegant wine.

This single-varietal Tempranillo comes from a vintage that was classified as Excellent in the Denominación de Origen. It’s been aged for 24 months in 225-litre American and French oak barrels and is notable for its elegance and complexity. It’s made from selected grapes from old vines located at an altitude of more than 900 metres grown in clayey soils that produce elegant and well-structured wines as their ripening cycles are longer, leading to more polyphenols. The differences between day and nighttime temperatures during the summer season cause them to ripen more slowing, resulting in greater pigmentation and more concentrated tannins. The vintage was classified as Excellent.

The Pérez Cuevas are one of the most iconic Rioja families. The founders of the historic Ontañón brand, they’ve successfully expanded into other Denominaciones de Origen. Rippa Dorii is the name of their winery in the D.O. Ribera del Duero. In fact, it’s the Latin name for this historic region. Based in Fuentecén (Burgos), this winery is characterised for the balance between fruit and wood in its wines.

Dominio de la Abadesa Reserva 2020 is perfect with fillet of beef au poivre or roast suckling pig.

The winery

Bodegas Ontañón
The fourth generation of the Pérez Cuevas family continues, day by day, the tradition of viticulture in Rioja Oriental. Gabriel Pérez inherited the vineyards from the lands of his ancestors on the outskirts of the town of Quel, on the high slopes of the Sierra de Yerga. When Gabriel took the reins in the early 70s, he began producing wine from those vineyards instead of selling his grapes as had been done until then. He was determined to create a wine that embodied the region of Quel, where his family had deep roots and where he knew wines of great quality were born. Since then, Ontañón has been committed to the vineyards of these unique terroirs. Over the years, Bodegas Ontañón has expanded its expertise to iconic denominations such as Ribera del Duero, Rueda, and Navarra.
