Coma Calcari 2021 is an exceptional single-varietal of garnacha blanca from the Coma Alta plot, located at the highest point of the La Coma Valley (hence the name), in Priorat. Mas d’en Gil, a renowned winery of the D.O.Q., signs this magnificent example of biodynamic viticulture and winemaking.
World-renowned for its reds, Catalonia's Priorat also offers outstanding and intriguing whites, increasingly appreciated and recognized by critics and the public alike. This is the case of Coma Calcari 2021, a single-varietal wine made from garnacha blanca, crafted by Mas d’en Gil with selected fruits from one of its highest-altitude plots in the La Coma Valley, located in the southern part of the D.O.Q.
The altitude and soil composition, primarily licorella, the famous slate of the Priorat, imparted great freshness, complexity, and a distinctive mineral touch to the grapes. One-third of the garnacha blanca grapes selected by Mas d’en Gil to create Coma Calcari 2021 were fermented in 500-liter barrels, and in these French oak vessels, the resulting wine underwent 6 months of aging, followed by at least another 12 months of bottle aging. Its salty and vibrant palate makes this fantastic white an ideal choice to pair with tempuras, tuna carpaccio, or a fine selection of aged goat and sheep cheeses.
In appearance, it shows a pale yellow color with greenish hues.
On the nose, fruity aromas (peach tree and citrus), floral (almond tree), and undergrowth dominate.
The entry on the palate is creamy. Its calcareous terroir of origin provides a mineral and saline touch at the finish. Structured and subtle.
