General Information

World-renowned for its reds, the Catalan Priorat also offers remarkable and intriguing whites, increasingly appreciated and recognized by critics and the public alike. This is the case of Coma Calcari 2020, a single-varietal garnacha blanca crafted by Mas d’en Gil using selected fruits from one of its highest-altitude plots, located in the La Coma Valley, in the southern part of the D.O.Q.

The altitude and soil composition, primarily licorella, the famous slate of the Priorat, endowed the grapes with great freshness, complexity, and a distinctive mineral touch. One-third of the selected garnacha blanca grapes used by Mas d’en Gil to create Coma Calcari 2020 was fermented in 500-liter barrels, and the resulting wine underwent 6 months of aging in these French oak containers, followed by at least another 12 months of bottle aging. Its saline and vibrant palate makes this fantastic white an ideal choice to pair with tempura, tuna carpaccio, or a fine selection of aged goat and sheep cheeses.

Tasting notes

In appearance, it shows a pale yellow color with greenish hues.

On the nose, fruity aromas (peach tree and citrus), floral (almond tree), and undergrowth dominate.

The entry on the palate is unctuous. Its calcareous terroir of origin brings a mineral and saline touch to the finish. Structured and subtle.

The winery

Although its journey, as we know it today, began in 1998 when the ownership of the estate that gives it its name passed into the hands of the Rovira Carbonell family, the history of the winery Mas d’en Gil dates back to the second half of the 19th century.

Francesc Gil was the first owner of this 125-hectare estate (45 of which are vineyards), located 350 meters above sea level in the municipality of Bellmunt del Priorat, in what is now considered the southern area of the D.O.Q. Priorat. Over the years, the estate became part of the heritage of several families, including that of the modernist artist Santiago Rusiñol.

In the late 1990s, the Rovira Carbonell family acquired it and restored its historic name of Mas d’en Gil. Under the direction of Pepe Rovira, one of the great names in Penedès wine, the winery's first productions were launched on the market in the year 2000. Currently, the family business is led by his youngest daughter, Marta Rovira Carbonell, who has implemented organic farming throughout the estate, among other measures.

The grapes with which Mas d’en Gil produces its wines, mainly Garnacha and Cariñena, grow in vineyards spread across slopes of licorella among five valleys, Mediterranean forest, and plantations of olive, almond, and hazelnut trees. This particular terroir imparts a distinct typicity not only to their fantastic whites and reds but also to the exquisite oil and vinegar they additionally produce.
