This is one of the best whites from the Bierzo region made from Godello, a grape variety that’s currently all the rage. It comes from Casar de Burbia, a family-run firm who only make wines from grapes grown on their own vineyards: excellent vines that are organically certified. Casar de Burbia Godello 2023 was grown on old vines located in Valdepiñeiro and Valdaiga in Valtuille de Arriba, an area that boasts the most coveted vineyards in El Bierzo. They are high-altitude vines between 30 and 40 years old, and systemic products and chemical weedkillers are never used on their soils. This provided the winery with clean, natural lees on which to age this wine for 9 months.

Casar de Burbia Godello 2023 – an organically certified wine – comes from high-altitude vineyards. These old vines (30–40 years in age) owned by the winery are cultivated according to sustainable grape-growing principles. Valtuille de Arriba is a real treasure, home to many of the most coveted vines of the D.O. Bierzo. Owning vines along the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago de Compostela in the Valtuille area is unquestionably a quality factor. As a result, this white has everything it takes to become one of the most interesting Godellos on the market.
The Godello vines grow at an altitude of 600 metres on the Valdepiñeiro and Valdaiga estates and have clay soils with medium-size stones. The altitude of the vineyards is conducive to slower ripening: in fact, harvesting takes place 20 days later on average compared to lower-lying plots. The must underwent cold pre-fermentation followed by fermentation at a low temperature in stainless steel vats for about 45 days. It was then aged for a long nine months on the fine lees.
Casar de Burbia is one of the driving forces behind the exceptional increase in quality in the D.O. Bierzo. It’s a family winery that’s supplied exclusively by its own vineyards: 27 hectares spread over more than 250 plots, all located on the slopes of Valtuille de Arriba, the cradle of Bierzo. The vineyards are certified in Organic Agriculture by CAECYL.
Casar de Burbia Godello 2023 (D.O. Bierzo) is ideal with white fish baked with lemon and herbs.
Bold, ripe and exuberant aromas of peach, mango and above all grapefruit and citrus fruits, leading to a subtle, delicious and fleshy palate with core flavours of sweet, fresh fruit, long and ripe.
In the early 1980s, a time when many farmers in Bierzo were getting rid of their vines because they were not generating significant profits, Nemesio Fernández began acquiring old vineyards in the best areas of this Leonese region, around Valtuille. It was not until 1989 that the Casar de Burbia project was launched. Isidro, Nemesio's son, is now at the helm of this winery based in Carracedelo.
Casar de Burbia boasts a fantastic viticultural heritage based almost exclusively on the mencía variety. It has 27 hectares of vineyards spread across more than 250 plots, all located on the slopes of Valtuille de Arriba, the cradle of Bierzo. The vineyards are certified Organic Agriculture by CAECYL. Without a doubt, this is one of the wineries driving the exceptional quality growth of the D.O. Bierzo.
