General Information

Campillo Blanco Fermentado en Barrica 2023 is one of the great commitments of Bodegas Campillo to aged white wines, hitting the mark with this Rioja that has already been rated 92 points by James Suckling, who highlights its freshness, vibrant acidity, and long finish. It comes from vineyards owned by the winery itself, located in the Finca Monte de Laguardia, at more than 650 meters above sea level. It is made with viura from 40-year-old vines and one of the first chardonnay vineyards planted in Rioja.

The production of Campillo Blanco Fermentado en Barrica 2023 relies on nighttime harvesting and cold maceration, which preserve all the freshness and aromatic expression of the grapes. Fermentation takes place in new French and American oak barrels for 20 days, using native yeasts. Subsequently, the wine remains on its lees for 3 to 4 months, with manual batonnage, giving it volume, creaminess, and complexity.

Campillo Blanco Fermentado en Barrica 2023 pairs well with seafood dishes, especially salmon or sea bass; also with meats like roasted chicken or turkey. Its complex flavor profile and subtle oak notes make it an excellent choice for aged cheeses and dishes with creamy sauces.

The winery

Bodegas Campillo

Campillo (1990) is one of the wineries that marked the modernity of Rioja and one of the most representative wineries of Rioja Alavesa. Located in Laguardia, the heart of Rioja Alavesa, it is considered the ‘boutique’ and most exclusive winery of the Faustino Group: one of the major winemaking groups in the country, led by a centenary lineage. With Campillo, Julio Faustino Martínez fulfilled his dream of creating a winery inspired by the French ‘châteaux,’ as he pursued an innovative concept, with the vineyards surrounding the facilities. Additionally, Campillo was one of the first ventures into avant-garde architecture, and its impressive facilities remain highly relevant today.

Campillo aims to offer in its wines the maximum expression of tempranillo. To achieve this goal, the Faustino Group - now renamed as Familia Martínez Zabala - decided to establish this project in the area of Laguardia, where they acquired 50 hectares of vineyards. Later, they expanded this viticultural heritage with 50 more hectares near the Sierra de Cantabria. In total, 100 hectares of vineyards - distributed within a maximum distance of 10 km from the winery - are cultivated on poor soils that provide low yields of highly structured fruits with good acidity, perfect for crafting expressive wines capable of enduring long aging in oak and with great aging potential. Elegance, freshness, and a fruity profile perfectly integrated with barrel notes are the defining characteristics of their wines.
