General Information

Barbeito 3 Years Medium Sweet is a wine made from the tinta negra (negramoll) variety, yet it appears pale, almost white. To produce this peculiar wine, once the must has reached the desired sugar level, and after fortifying it, it undergoes the well-known estufagem process, where the barrels are exposed to very high temperatures (around 50ºC) for a long period of time, with the aim of imparting its unmistakable character to the wine.  After this peculiar process, Barbeito 3 Years Medium Sweet rests in oak barrels for 3 years for refinement.

Barbeito is a family business founded in 1946 by Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos. Although the firm initially focused on glass bottle production, over time they became Madeira wine producers, sourcing grapes from the best growers in the area. Today, they are one of the most internationally renowned wineries, thanks to wines like the one we are discussing.

Barbeito 3 Years Medium Sweet (Madeira D.O.P.) is the ideal wine to accompany smoked cold cuts, cheeses, or sweet desserts. It does not need to be decanted and can last several months open if stored in optimal conditions.

Tasting notes

It presents a light golden color.

On the nose, we find hints of apricot jam, tropical fruits, caramel, and honey.

On the palate, it is a smooth, fine, and well-balanced wine. With an exceptional harmony between sweetness and the freshness of its acidity.

The winery

Winery

Of great international prestige, Barbeito is a family winery founded in 1946 by Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos. Although initially the company was dedicated to the production of glass bottles, over time they became producers of Madeira wines, sourcing grapes from the best viticulturists in the region and crafting them while respecting the traditional method. The success of these wines, already consumed by the English in the 17th century, has made them highly sought-after and appreciated primarily in the international market.

Barbeito currently offers a wide range of wines in three categories: Single Harvest (single-varietal vintage wines made using the traditional canteiro method), Single Cask (from barrels selected for their exceptional quality), and Frasqueira (the jewels of the winery, with over 20 years of maturation).
