Azpilicueta Reserva 2020 is a red wine crafted by one of the great Rioja wineries through a blend dominated by the star grape of Rioja, tempranillo, complemented with a touch of other local varieties: graciano and mazuelo. It undergoes a production process lasting 20 to 30 days at a temperature between 28º and 30ºC, followed by 16 months of aging in French and American oak barrels with different toasting levels to enhance the aromas of the varieties, and an additional 20 months of bottle aging before being released to the market.
The winery's name honors Félix Azpilicueta, one of the most important figures in the history of Rioja wine. This pioneering winemaker arrived in Fuenmayor in 1881, in Rioja Alta, and fell in love with the place and its vineyards, deciding to establish a winery there. Soon, his wines became a regional benchmark, and he was also a pioneer in exporting Rioja wines. Today, Bodegas Azpilicueta owns 800 hectares of vineyards, most of which are located around Fuenmayor, a municipality with an irregular topography that allows work with plots at different altitudes, orientations, and slopes.
In 2001, Azpilicueta inaugurated new facilities, a modern and sustainable building designed by Rioja architect Ignacio Quemada. Here, the modern winemaking process incorporates traditional practices, such as grape descent by gravity and the excavation of the winery. In 2011, it became the first Spanish winery to certify its Carbon Footprint through AENOR, in compliance with the ISO 14064 standard.
Azpilicueta Reserva 2020 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) pairs wonderfully with braised oxtail or roasted suckling pig.
It presents an intense ruby color with tile-like reflections.
On the nose, it has subtle aromas of vanilla and membrillo.
On the palate, it is smooth, silky, and pleasantly persistent.
Integrated into the group of wineries of the giant Pernod Ricard, a leader in the production, commercialization, and export of quality wines from Spain to more than 70 countries, Bodegas Azpilicueta was founded in 1881 by Félix Azpilicueta under the original name of Romeral. Since the 1990s, the new technical department of the group has been firmly committed to recovering the essence of aged Rioja wines, choosing Azpilicueta to carry out this wine dissemination endeavor.
In 2001, Azpilicueta inaugurated new facilities: a modern and sustainable building where architecture and cutting-edge winemaking perfectly complement each other. These facilities (where the wines of the Campo Viejo winery, owned by the same group, are also produced) were designed by the renowned Rioja architect Ignacio Quemada.
Bodegas Azpilicueta has 800 hectares of vineyards to work within the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Most of the vineyards supplying the company are located around Fuenmayor, a municipality with an irregular topography that allows work with plots at different altitudes, orientations, and slopes. The renowned winemaker Elena Adell leads the Azpilicueta wine range.
