General Information

Azpilicueta Reserva 2019 is a red wine made by one of the great Rioja wineries through a blend dominated by Rioja's star grape, Tempranillo, complemented by a touch of other local varieties: Graciano and Mazuelo. It’s production takes around 20 to 30 days at a temperature of between 28º and 30ºC and it’s then aged for 16 months in French and American oak barrels, with different toastings to enhance the aromas of the varieties, followed by 20 more months settling in the bottle before being going to market.

The winery is named after Félix Azpilicueta, one of the most important figures in the history of Rioja wine. This pioneering winegrower arrived in Fuenmayor in 1881, in Rioja Alta, fell in love with this place and its vineyards, and decided to found a winery here. Soon his wines became a benchmark in the region, and he was also a pioneer in the export of Rioja wines. Today, Bodegas Azpilicueta has 800 hectares of vineyards; most of located in the surroundings of Fuenmayor, a municipality with an irregular topography that enables exposed plots to be worked on at different altitudes, with different orientations and slopes.

In 2001 Azpilicueta opened a new site; a modern and sustainable building, designed by the Rioja architect Ignacio Quemada. The winery also produces the wines of Campo Viejo, owned by the same group: Pernod Ricard. In 2011, this was the first Spanish winery to certify its carbon footprint through AENOR, in line with the ISO 14064 standard.

Azpilicueta Reserva 2019 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) harmonises wonderfully with red meats such as a T-bone steak with mushroom sauce.

Creators' opinion

This wine has an intense ruby colour with terracotta reflections. On the nose it has subtle aromas of vanilla and quince. On the palate, it’s soft, silky and with pleasant persistence.

The winery

Bodegas Azpilicueta

Integrated into the group of wineries of the giant Pernod Ricard, a leader in the production, commercialization, and export of quality wines from Spain to more than 70 countries, Bodegas Azpilicueta was founded in 1881 by Félix Azpilicueta under the original name of Romeral. Since the 1990s, the new technical department of the group has been firmly committed to recovering the essence of aged Rioja wines, choosing Azpilicueta to carry out this wine dissemination endeavor.

In 2001, Azpilicueta inaugurated new facilities: a modern and sustainable building where architecture and cutting-edge winemaking perfectly complement each other. These facilities (where the wines of the Campo Viejo winery, owned by the same group, are also produced) were designed by the renowned Rioja architect Ignacio Quemada.

Bodegas Azpilicueta has 800 hectares of vineyards to work within the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Most of the vineyards supplying the company are located around Fuenmayor, a municipality with an irregular topography that allows work with plots at different altitudes, orientations, and slopes. The renowned winemaker Elena Adell leads the Azpilicueta wine range.
