General Information

Azpilicueta Reserva 2018 is a red made by one of the major Rioja wineries from a blend dominated by the star Rioja grape, Tempranillo, enhanced with a touch of other local varieties: Graciano and Mazuelo. The grapes were vinified for 20 to 30 days at a temperature of between 28º and 30ºC and the wine was then aged for 16 months in French and American oak barrels with different degrees of toasting to bring out the aromas of the grape varieties, followed by a further 20 months in the bottle before being released onto the market.

Félix Azpilicueta is one of the foremost figures in the history of Rioja wine. This pioneering grape grower arrived in Fuenmayor, in Rioja Alta, back in 1881. He fell in love with the place and its vineyards and decided to establish a winery there. Today Bodegas Azpilicueta has 800 hectares of vines, mostly in and around Fuenmayor, a municipality with an uneven terrain that makes it possible to work with plots with different altitudes, orientations and slopes.

In 2001 Azpilicueta moved into its new facilities, a modern and sustainable building designed by Rioja architect Ignacio Quemada. The Campo Viejo wines, owned by the same group – Pernod Ricard – are also made there. In 2011 it was the first Spanish winery to be awarded the ISO 14064 carbon footprint certificate by AENOR.

Azpilicueta Reserva 2018 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is perfect with meat dishes such as beef shanks in red wine or pork cheeks in a sweet sherry sauce.

Creators' opinion

Deep ruby red with brick-red glints. Subtle aromas of vanilla and quince in the nose. Silky-smooth palate and nice long finish.

The winery

Bodegas Azpilicueta

Integrated into the group of wineries of the giant Pernod Ricard, a leader in the production, commercialization, and export of quality wines from Spain to more than 70 countries, Bodegas Azpilicueta was founded in 1881 by Félix Azpilicueta under the original name of Romeral. Since the 1990s, the new technical department of the group has been firmly committed to recovering the essence of aged Rioja wines, choosing Azpilicueta to carry out this wine dissemination endeavor.

In 2001, Azpilicueta inaugurated new facilities: a modern and sustainable building where architecture and cutting-edge winemaking perfectly complement each other. These facilities (where the wines of the Campo Viejo winery, owned by the same group, are also produced) were designed by the renowned Rioja architect Ignacio Quemada.

Bodegas Azpilicueta has 800 hectares of vineyards to work within the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Most of the vineyards supplying the company are located around Fuenmayor, a municipality with an irregular topography that allows work with plots at different altitudes, orientations, and slopes. The renowned winemaker Elena Adell leads the Azpilicueta wine range.
