With the guarantees of a vintage rated as Excellent in the D.O.Ca. Rioja, Campillo Edición Limitada Crianza 2021 was grown on Tempranillo vines between 30 and 60 years old. The grapes came from selected plots owned by the family in the Laguardia area (Rioja Alavesa). The vines are cultivated in drained clay-lime soils and produce yields of 5,500 kg/ha. Harvesting is by hand.
Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation took place in 30,000-litre vats with different kinds of yeasts, including natural yeasts from the vineyards. The wine was aged for 12 months in medium- and medium-plus-toast barrels. All the work with barrels and, subsequently, with bottles, was performed entirely by hand.
Rioja is the most iconic Spanish wine region and a name that’s synonymous with quality worldwide. More than 600 wineries are scattered throughout the area, but only a small number qualify as what the French call ‘châteaux’. This ideal concept is characterised by vineyards surrounding the winemaking building, making it easier to care for and transport the grapes. Campillo (1990) is a perfect example of this model, with its 50 hectares of vineyards located in one of the best parts of the great Rioja, the medieval town of Laguardia.
Campillo is also one of the firms that marked modern Rioja and one of the most representative wineries in the Rioja Alavesa subzone. This boutique winery is the most exclusive firm owned by Familia Martínez Zabala (formerly the Faustino group), one of the country’s leading wine groups, run by the same family for more than a century. Campillo was also one of the first firms to adopt a cutting-edge architectural design for its impressive facilities, which still have a fully modern appearance today.
The vegan red Campillo Edición Limitada Crianza 2021 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is ideal with roast chicken with herbs such as thyme and rosemary.
Black cherry colour, evolving to a shade of garnet. Intense and complex nose with predominant aromas of red fruit and spice along with hints of toast.
Potent and flavoursome on the palate with mouth-filling tannins and good acidity.
2020 produced fine quality wines. A difficult spring gave way to a slightly rainier summer than usual, followed by lower temperatures in September. This Campillo Crianza displays balance, good structure and aromatic potential.
Campillo (1990) is one of the wineries that marked the modernity of Rioja and one of the most representative wineries of Rioja Alavesa. Located in Laguardia, the heart of Rioja Alavesa, it is considered the ‘boutique’ and most exclusive winery of the Faustino Group: one of the major winemaking groups in the country, led by a centenary lineage. With Campillo, Julio Faustino Martínez fulfilled his dream of creating a winery inspired by the French ‘châteaux,’ as he pursued an innovative concept, with the vineyards surrounding the facilities. Additionally, Campillo was one of the first ventures into avant-garde architecture, and its impressive facilities remain highly relevant today.
Campillo aims to offer in its wines the maximum expression of tempranillo. To achieve this goal, the Faustino Group - now renamed as Familia Martínez Zabala - decided to establish this project in the area of Laguardia, where they acquired 50 hectares of vineyards. Later, they expanded this viticultural heritage with 50 more hectares near the Sierra de Cantabria. In total, 100 hectares of vineyards - distributed within a maximum distance of 10 km from the winery - are cultivated on poor soils that provide low yields of highly structured fruits with good acidity, perfect for crafting expressive wines capable of enduring long aging in oak and with great aging potential. Elegance, freshness, and a fruity profile perfectly integrated with barrel notes are the defining characteristics of their wines.
