General information
The 2020 vintage received the highest rating – Excellent – in the D.O. Bierzo. This is a further factor in the final quality of this red made by one of the most important wineries in the region. The essential ingredient of Pétalos del Bierzo 2020 is the Denominación’s star grape, Mencía, which accounts for 92% of the blend, and is enhanced by a combination of the red Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne and Negreda varieties (5%) and the white Valenciana, Jerez and Godello grapes (2%).
It was grown on old vines aged between 40 and 90 years old located on hillsides (at an altitude of between 450 and 1,100 metres) in several municipalities, chiefly Corullón and Villafranca del Bierzo. These vineyards have different soils: for example, slate in Corullón, others that are ferrous-clay and pebbly, and a few that are sandy. This diversity adds complexity to the wine. The vines were harvested by hand and the grapes were sorted. Inside the winery, fermentation took place in wooden vats and stainless steel tanks with native yeasts. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 8 months in barrels and bottled without filtering.
By the time he arrived in Bierzo, Álvaro Palacios was already one of the most brilliant figures on the Spanish wine scene, having made history and captivated international critics with his work in the Priorat region (L’Ermita, Finca Dofí...). In 1999 he went to the Bierzo region and teamed up with his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios to establish Descendientes J. Palacios, a winery that produces wines of amazing quality, such as Moncerbal, La Faraona (100 Parker points) and Corullón. These reds have taken Mencía to heights that were unimaginable only a few years ago.
Pétalos 2020 (D.O. Bierzo) is ideal with meat dishes such as T-bone steak cooked on a hot stone.
