Marqués de Cáceres Selección Especial Crianza 2019
A new Ribera del Duero wine from a leading Spanish brand
Marqués de Cáceres is the most internationally renowned Spanish wine brand. The firm produces wine in the three Spanish regions that begin with an R: Rioja (where it started out), Rueda and Ribera del Duero. In Ribera it acquired Finca La Capilla, which makes wine from grapes grown in vineyards located in one of the best areas of the Denominación. Marqués de Cáceres Selección Especial Crianza 2019 comes from these Tinta del País (Tempranillo) vines. It’s a truly ‘special’ red as it’s the first time Finca La Capilla has produced a wine under the brand of the mother company, and has done so exclusively for Vinoselección! Plus, it comes from an Excellent vintage – a superb wine with the typical character of the part of Ribera del Duero that’s located in the province of Burgos and very fruit forward.
General information
Marqués de Cáceres Selección Especial Crianza 2019, made entirely from Tinta del País grapes, comes from an Excellent vintage, and was grown a 4.5-hectare vineyard located in Anguix, in the part of Ribera del Duero located in Burgos. The vines, cultivated with utmost care and respect and with yields of less than 4,500 kg/ha, grow in a mosaic of soils highly suited to grape growing.
Despite the small size of the area, the terroirs vary greatly. Limestone veins on a base of poor tertiary soils with little organic matter lend structure and minerality to the wines grown here. The Tinta del País (Tempranillo) grapes were harvested by hand in small crates, plot by plot. The bunches arrived in optimal conditions for beginning careful vinification as the winery is only a short distance away.
The wine was made using artisanal methods: in small stainless steel vats with whole grapes and native yeast from the bunches. Long maceration periods without reaching the point of overextraction. All the processes were gravity-fed, without pumping or movements that can undermine grape quality. The result was a red that preserves all its fruity aromas and displays the depth of colour characteristic of Ribera del Duero wines.
The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in gently medium-toasted French oak barrels. After bottling, it was matured in the winery for a further two years.
In 2019 the Rioja winery Marques de Cáceres, run by the Forner family, achieved its wish to expand into Ribera del Duero after acquiring Finca La Capilla. After searching for several years, it found what it was looking for in one of the best parts of this Denominación. Finca La Capilla makes wines from grapes grown on 60 hectares of vineyards located in the Roa, Anguix and La Horra districts (province of Burgos).
Its philosophy is based on a strict selection of plots by type of soil and qualitative potential, extreme care over the vineyard and artisanal winemaking methods. All this results in red wines with succulent tannins and an elegant structure that fully reflect the personality of the terroir.
Marqués de Cáceres Selección Especial Crianza 2019 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is produced in limited quantities: 67 barrels, or 19,890 bottles. It’s ideal with grilled sweetbreads or char-grilled lamb chops.
CATA's notes
Deeply pigmented, vivid, brilliant colour. Intense nose of ripe fruit, spices and mineral notes, characteristic of the 2019 vintage. Notes of fresh fruit blend with subtle, elegant hints of wood that enhance without masking the rich flavours of the Tinta del País grape.Share:
