Senda 2019
Garnachas from Gredos, in the international limelight
Senda 2019 bears the hallmark of a pioneering winery in the revival of Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos, and shows the gentler and more elegant side of this variety. It is the result of blending grapes from several mountain plots with others from old Garnacha vines grown in gobelet-trained and dry-farmed, organic vineyards. Aged for 10 months in French oak, it’s a very fresh, lively and aromatic wine.
General information
A romantic venture. That’s how Las Moradas de San Martín can be defined, a small winery that was founded in 1999 with the idea of making quality wine from the native Garnacha grape, then unfairly forgotten. The winery focused on recovering old vineyards in an area with a long winemaking history: San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the Sierra de Gredos, southwest of Madrid. This is where Senda 2019 comes from, a red wine that showcases a unique style of Garnacha, a reflection of the particular terroir of Las Moradas.
Las Moradas de San Martín was a pioneer in a movement that was joined by Spanish wine figures and wineries which have earned Gredos's Garnachas international attention and acclaim. After thoroughly studying soils and producing micro quantities, the winery decided to establish itself in Pago de los Castillejos, at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level, where they pamper and rescue century-old Garnacha vines.
The grapes that went into making this red wine came from the Panaderos, Corzos, Boquerón, La Coja and Poniente plots, with granitic sandy loam soils, where the vines produce low yields (only 2,100 kg/ha), and the grapes reach optimum acidity, good ripeness and balance. The grapes were harvested by hand. Once in the winery, the bunches were selected on a sorting table and fermented with their own yeasts. The wine was aged for 10 months in 500-litre French oak barrels. After that, the wine was blended in tanks until bottling, without being clarified or filtered.
Senda 2019 (D.O. Vinos de Madrid) is perfect with barbecued red meats, rice with meat and vegetables or pasta carbonara.
