Ribera del Duero – Valladolid versus Burgos
Pruno, Lleiroso and Dominio de la Abadesa, three superb barrel-aged reds
There is much discussion about the different characteristics of the parts of Ribera del Duero located in the provinces of Valladolid and Burgos. Valladolid is home to the so-called ‘golden mile’, where several of the D.O's top wines are produced. But there's no doubt that the Burgos area is becoming increasingly fashionable: it's the part of the region with the largest expanses of old vineyards, and its soils are more compact and clayey. We've brought together two red wines from the Valladolid ‘golden mile’. The first is Pruno Red Edition 2022, an exclusive edition of one of the most sought-after wines since Parker chose it as the best Spanish wine in history for under 20 dollars. The second is Lleiroso Crianza 2021, from an excellent vintage and winner of the gold medal at the Mundus Vini 2024 Summer Tasting. The selection is completed by Dominio de la Abadesa Reserva 2020, grown on old vines in the Burgos municipality of Fuentecén and from an Excellent vintage. Three ‘gems’ that shouldn't be missed.
- 2 bottles of Pruno Red Edition 2022. Finca Villacreces. D.O. Ribera del Duero.
- 2 bottles of Lleiroso Crianza 2021. B. Lleiroso. D.O. Ribera del Duero.
- 2 bottles of Dominio de la Abadesa Reserva 2020. B. Rippa Dorii. D.O. Ribera del Duero.
General information
When Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate) chose Pruno as the best-value Spanish wine ever for less than 20 dollars, it became one of the most sought-after wines in Spain and an icon of Ribera del Duero. This is the fourth time Finca Villacreces has made a special edition of this label for us: Pruno Red Edition 2022, a red that’s bound to sell out in record time, like its predecessors. What’s more, this 2022 vintage has been awarded 92 Parker points. Essential for understanding what the new Ribera del Duero wines are all about and one of the best-value wines in the world.
Lleiroso Crianza 2021 is an authentic, characterful Ribera del Duero wine produced in Valbuena de Duero, one of the most iconic and sought-after municipalities in Valladolid's ‘golden mile’. Made exclusively from Tempranillo grapes from the winery's 30 hectares of old vines, it also comes with the guarantees of an Excellent vintage. It's been matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, a carefully calculated ageing process that perfectly complements the wine's primary aromas. The result is a highly recommended Ribera del Duero that's already won a gold medal at the Mundus Vini 2024 Summer Tasting.
A few years ago the Pérez Cuevas family from Rioja, the founders of Bodegas Ontañón, turned their attention to Ribera del Duero. It was an almost instant success. Established in Fuentecén (Burgos) with the name Rippa Dorii, it makes potent yet elegant and structured wines. A good example is this Dominio de la Abadesa Reserva 2020, designed exclusively for Vinoselección from a vintage with an Excellent rating. It’s become one of the hits of the year – not that we’re surprised. It’s a single-varietal made from Tempranillo grapes from old vines and has been aged for 24 months in American and French barrels.
