V.T. Castilla y León

In 2000, a group of winemakers from the region requested the creation of the denomination “Vino de la Tierra Castilla y León” to designate their wines. In this way, they could channel much of the wine produced in these lands and stock up on grapes from Castilla y Leon, ensuring price stability and the quality of grapes and wines. Wines made under the seal of Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León have straightforward clean and unoxidised aromas (except in cases where the wines have undergone oxidative ageing). The wines aged in oak must remain a minimum of three months in barrel, and must enjoy the aromas and taste characteristics of that maturation These wines may only be processed and / or aged in warehouses located in the territory of the Autonomous Community of Castile and León and with grapes from vineyards registered in the Department of Viticulture of Agriculture and Livestock of Castilla y León. Soil and Weather

Climate en V.T. Castilla y León:

This region situated around the Douro basin has long, cold winters with little rainfall and short mild and dry summers. The plains enjoys rainfall of around 500mm per year or less. The Southwest region, Los Arribes del Duero, has somewhat milder and rainier winters. The mountains area counts with higher rainfall, mainly in the form of snow, reaching 800-900 mm yearly, although the temperatures are similar to that of the other areas. The Bierzo area, located between mountains, enjoys shorter and milder winters with intermediate levels of rainfall between those of the plain and the mountain area, and a summer drought.

Soil en V.T. Castilla y León:

The soil of the Castilla y León region is heterogeneous and diverse, without any large uniform area. However, its geography counts with mountain, river meadows and valley bottoms and plains and moors. The soils in the mountains are generally mineral-poor, eroded and acidic, unfit for growing grapes. The river valleys are alluvial, medium texture coarse (sandy-stony), medium depth and with little water retention capacity but allow good soil aeration. The valley soils have a slimy texture and are chemically more complex. The soils of the plains consist of brown limestone, clay loam texture and low organic matter which together with its continental Mediterranean climate and low rainfall enable to produce the best wines of the region of Castilla y León
