Viña Cubillo Crianza 2013 is a red that’s unique in its kind: an entry-level wine that’s a real luxury, created from top-quality grapes that have been aged for a very long period in both barrel and bottle. The winery that makes it, R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, embodies the concept of the most authentic, classical Rioja style.

Viña Cubillo Crianza 2013 is an artisanal wine from a year with difficult meteorological conditions in which expertise in selecting the best grapes determined the quality of the end result. It was grown on old vines located in Haro, in Rioja Alta, and is a blend of four varieties: Tempranillo (mainly), Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. It was barrel aged for a period equivalent to that of a Gran Reserva, three years, clarified with egg white, and bottled without filtering.

Founded in 1877 in Haro, in the heart of the Rioja wine region, R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is unique worldwide for its incomparable winemaking method that continues to employ century-old practices and techniques. It’s run by the fourth generation of the López de Heredia family and remains true – with slight tweaks – to its original philosophy. The López de Heredias define themselves as grape growers – their supply of grapes comes from their own vineyards, where they use natural methods and keep intervention to a minimum – and above all as artisanal winemakers.

Viña Cubillo Crianza 2013 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is perfect with large game such as loin of venison with pear confit or wild boar stew.

Complex and elegant nose. Jammy black fruit (blackberry and cassis) together with spicy notes (nutmeg and oregano) and hints of liquorice are followed by pleasant reduction notes (leather and tobacco), and hints of smoke and cocoa, all in perfect harmony over a dairy background.

The elegance of the nose continues in the velvety palate with noble, nicely integrated tannins. Long finish with superb hints of fruit in liquor.
