General information
Marqués de Cáceres Edición Especial Reserva 2019 (an Excellent vintage) is an exclusive red designed in conjunction with this Rioja firm’s winemakers from a selection of Tempranillo plots. It’s been aged for 22 months in new barrels (50% French and 50% American oak).
Back in 2014 Vinoselección introduced you to the first vintage of an exclusive wine created with the winemaking department of the legendary Marqués de Cáceres. Something they’d never done before. This new creation, Marqués de Cáceres Edición Especial Reserva, laid the foundations for what has become one of your favourites over the past decade.
This Reserva comes from a winery that’s been producing Bordeaux-style wines ever since it started out in 1970, when Enrique Forner from Valencia applied everything he'd learned at the French Château Camensac and Château Larose Trintaudon wineries to Rioja. The winery maintains this French influence with Cristina Forner, the founder's daughter, at the helm, and one of the world's most renowned wine consultants, Frenchman Michel Rolland, as an advisor.
Since the initial 2010 vintages, we've offered you this wine nearly every year except for 2013 and 2017, which were not up to the standard we require for you. This eighth edition, the 2019 vintage, is an exclusive Reserva wine made from Tempranillo grapes harvested by hand from plots planted in poor soils in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa.
Marqués de Cáceres Edición Especial Reserva 2019 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is ideal with grilled lamb chops.
CATA's notes
Cherry-red with a maroon edge, very intense pigmentation. Complex, fine nose with prominent notes of ripe red fruit together with notes of spice (nutmeg) and fine woods. Very full-flavoured and fresh with excellent balance. Smooth and moreish on mid-palate with fine, perfectly integrated tannins. Long, lingering finish.
Creators’ opinion
"Marqués de Cáceres is much more than you imagine. It’s reflected in its wines, which are synonymous with quality and assured enjoyment. Because ultimately that’s what it’s all about, treating yourself to a moment, an occasion, a pleasure or a nice gift. This exclusive 2019 Reserva comes from plots of vines cultivated in poor soils and grapes picked by hand in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. They’re located in the Sierra Cantabria, at altitudes of between 450 and 700 metres, and are planted with old vines, which infuse the wine with expression. It’s also worth remembering that 2018, a slightly warmer year than usual, suffered frost on 28 April that affected vines that had already sprouted and reduced their yield – conditions conducive to the full expressiveness of this Edición Especial Reserva. The careful selection of grapes and processing in small tanks created cuvées that were combined with harmony and balance. This is a very elegant wine that’s a joy to savour. Deeply nuanced nose with rich aromas and full-flavoured palate with silky tannins. "
