General information
Jean Leon Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2016 is an organic red wine made from the fruits of a single 8-hectare plot: Vinya La Scala, planted in 1963. It bears the hallmark of the pioneering Spanish winery in the production of wines with the French-origin grape variety cabernet sauvignon; in fact, Jean Leon Gran Reserva Vinya La Scala 1969 is considered, along with Mas La Plana 1970, as the first great Spanish 'cabernet sauvignon'.
With an aging process of 24 months in French oak barrels and a rounding of 3 years in the bottle, Jean Leon Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2016 is part of the small group of Catalan wines classified as ‘Vi de Finca’, which means it comes from a single vineyard with unique characteristics that give it great singularity. It is the highest recognition a wine can achieve in Catalonia.
Jean Leon is a 'boutique' winery founded in 1963 by Jean Leon in the Penedès. Jean Leon, born in Santander under the name Ceferino Carrión, emigrated to the United States and managed to open the most luxurious restaurant in Hollywood: La Scala, frequented by major celebrities. His other great dream was to create a wine with his name that would live up to his select clientele, and in the heart of the Penedès he found the right land to make it a reality. There he acquired 150 hectares and replaced the native vines with noble French varieties, becoming a pioneer in the introduction of grapes such as cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and chardonnay in Spain. The name of this wine, Vinya La Scala, is a tribute to the restaurant that made him famous in the Mecca of cinema.
CATA's notes
Cherry red color with medium-high intensity.
On the nose, it stands out for its intensity, ripe red fruit, cherry jam, and balsamic notes, with toasted and spicy hints (clove, pepper, vanilla) from its barrel aging.
On the palate, it features a medium-high body with present tannic concentration that gives it voluptuousness and an enveloping fat. The tannins are smooth, providing an unctuous and elegant passage. Long and persistent finish.
Creators’ opinion
"Vinya La Scala Gran reserva is a wine that touches my heart. When we open bottles from the vintages of the 70s, 80s, 90s, or even the first decade of this century, I observe the great multitude of aromatic nuances that express the climate of each vintage and that are enhanced over the years of aging in the bottle."
