General information

The importance of origins

Telmo Rodríguez has mapped the course of part of Spain’s winemaking history in recent years. After taking over the family winery, this leading Spanish oenologist launched the highly successful Lindes de Remelluri. Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida 2013 highlights the importance of the place where the vines grow.

As its name indicates, Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida 2013 is made exclusively from grapes grown on vineyards in Labastida, a privileged enclave in Rioja Alavesa, and is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano. Aged in French oak barrels, it is a balanced, tasty and fresh Rioja with smooth tannins, a fruity mouthfeel with balsamic hints, and a nice long finish with elegant aromas from barrel ageing. Awarded 93 Parker points.

A picturesque estate in Labastida is home to Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri, the winery which, together with Contino, revolutionised Rioja Alavesa in the 1970s. Ahead of its time, they presented themselves as ‘the first Rioja chateau’, with vineyards and winemaking facilities on the same estate. Departing from the classical concept, they focused on making wines that are more modern, fruitier – and widely held to be more elegant. The winery is located in a historical setting, surrounded by a tenth-century medieval town.

In 1967 Jaime Rodríguez and Amaya Hernandorena acquired this enclave and started up Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri. The winery is now run by the second generation of the family, represented by Telmo Rodríguez, a prominent figure on the Spanish wine scene. Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida 2013 is ideal with char-grilled entrecote, baby lamb chops and even spaghetti bolognaise.
