General Information

Garnacha, cariñena, and syrah, sourced from a selection of vineyards in the Valle de la Coma, make up the delicious coupage that is Coma Vella 2018. The licorella soils where the vines grew and their east and west orientation, facing the Mediterranean Sea, endowed the wine with great smoothness and freshness, qualities that combined with the subtlety and elegance typical of that vintage in Priorat.

In 1998, the Rovira Carbonell family acquired the 125-hectare property (45 of vineyards) that comprises Mas d’en Gil, the estate located in the Bellmunt del Priorat area, from which their interesting winery project would take its name. Today, the brand is one of the most established in the D.O.Q. Priorat and its wines, brilliant fruits of organic and traditional agriculture, are a faithful reflection of their landscape of origin, as is the case with this Coma Vella 2018 we propose. A lively red that evokes the sensations of a spring walk through the Mediterranean forest and whose versatility makes it the ideal companion for meats like grilled lamb with Mediterranean herbs, Iberian pork, or Galician blonde beef; fatty blue fish, such as grilled tuna; or rice and risottos.

Tasting notes

Coma Vella exhibits a beautiful cherry red color of medium-high intensity to the eye.

On the nose, it is dominated by aromas of black fruit, especially cherry, and Mediterranean herbs.

The attack is slightly unctuous and the finish unmistakably fresh.

The winery

Although its journey, as we know it today, began in 1998 when the ownership of the estate that gives it its name passed into the hands of the Rovira Carbonell family, the history of the winery Mas d’en Gil dates back to the second half of the 19th century.

Francesc Gil was the first owner of this 125-hectare estate (45 of which are vineyards), located 350 meters above sea level in the municipality of Bellmunt del Priorat, in what is now considered the southern area of the D.O.Q. Priorat. Over the years, the estate became part of the heritage of several families, including that of the modernist artist Santiago Rusiñol.

In the late 1990s, the Rovira Carbonell family acquired it and restored its historic name of Mas d’en Gil. Under the direction of Pepe Rovira, one of the great names in Penedès wine, the winery's first productions were launched on the market in the year 2000. Currently, the family business is led by his youngest daughter, Marta Rovira Carbonell, who has implemented organic farming throughout the estate, among other measures.

The grapes with which Mas d’en Gil produces its wines, mainly Garnacha and Cariñena, grow in vineyards spread across slopes of licorella among five valleys, Mediterranean forest, and plantations of olive, almond, and hazelnut trees. This particular terroir imparts a distinct typicity not only to their fantastic whites and reds but also to the exquisite oil and vinegar they additionally produce.
