General information

Great small Ribera wineries

There are small wineries in Ribera del Duero that have taken up the legacy of the region’s first grape growers and currently rank among the most prestigious firms in the D.O. thanks to their magnificent work in the fields. One of them is Vizcarra. This highly selective winery makes wines that are in great demand and enjoy a strong presence on the international market, where they’re praised by critics. Vizcarra 2018 (15 months in barrels) is a red with great personality that’s respectful of varietal character, elegant and concentrated.

Emphasis on its own vineyards, traditional grape-growing methods and painstaking work in the fields underpin Bodegas Vizcarra’s philosophy. The raw materials that go into making Vizcarra 2018 are carefully selected: harvesting by hand and double sorting of bunches and berries. The wine was grown on Tempranillo vines more than 20 years old located in different plots in Mambrilla de Castrejón (Burgos). It underwent malolactic fermentation in American oak barrels and was aged for 15 months in American and French oak barrels.

Bodegas Vizcarra was started up in 1991 by Juan Carlos Vizcarra, the current owner and oenologist. His father, José Manuel Vizcarra, was one of the pioneers of grape growing in Ribera in the 1980s. Convinced of the value of these vineyards, in 1991 Juan Carlos began producing wine in rudimentary facilities. His wines have gradually become more polished and now compete in the top segment. In 2007, Vizcarra moved into new facilities where the whole winemaking process is based on the gravity-flow system.

The firm is notable for its marvellous work in the fields, where it swears by traditional, painstaking grape cultivation on smallholdings, as its 50 hectares of vines (from which its wines are made) are divided among small plots located in Mambrilla de Castrejón and Roa de Duero (Burgos).

Vizcarra 2018 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal with meat-based rice dishes, baby lamb chops, suckling pig and mature cheeses.
