There are surnames that are an essential part of a D.O.’s roots. Such is the case of Martínez Bujanda, the family at the helm of Bodegas Valdemar, which has been safeguarding the identity of Rioja reds for more than a century. In the 1980s this firm started out on a brilliant new stage in its history under the direction of Jesús Martínez, who has expertly designed a broad range of wines of consistently high quality.

Yes, the Martínez Bujanda winemaking family is responsible for this Rioja that ticks all the boxes. Perfect with those stews and hotpots you feel like eating in autumn. Any occasion or any excuse will do. Lively, pleasant to drink, with a long, fairly complex finish and an enticing baroque touch. A red with all-round appeal and a price to suit all pockets. Family wines With a winemaking track record that dates back to the nineteenth century, the Martínez Bujandas are one of the Rioja families with the longest experience in the sector. In the early 1980s, Jesús Martínez Bujanda developed a new product line that differed from that of the family firm and set up Bodegas Valdemar to safeguard a classical style within a modern and innovative winery that was supplied by some of the finest Rioja vineyards. The project was joined by his children Carlos and Ana, the fifth winemaking generation of the Martínez Bujanda family.

Tasting Notes

Profile sheet Conde de Valdemar 2012

Intense, appealing garnet-red colour with bright reflections of the same shade in the rim.

Clean, pleasantly intense nose displaying a full range of ripe red fruit with subtle hints of spicy, touches of scrub and subtle toasty undertones.

Fresh on the attack with a good tannic structure, just the right amount of acidity and big and balanced mid-palate in which the wood blends perfectly with the fruit to give a great mouthfeel. Reminisces of its long ageing period carry through to a long finish.
