Life is meant to be enjoyed – a maxim that’s worth remembering every morning of the year, come rain or shine, cold or heat. If you want to live it up with a traditional Rioja, here’s one that will never let you down: Montecillo Gran Reserva 2011. This serious, elegant and complex red comes from a historic vintage in Rioja – touted by many as the finest of the past twenty years, because it has produced wines that are longer-lived than usual. In fact, this Gran Reserva is currently at its best. Don’t miss it, now you can enjoy it any time, in any place – and at the best price!

We bring you a Reserva from one of the oldest and most prestigious Rioja wineries. Founded in 1874, Bodegas Montecillo is located in Fuenmayor, at the heart of the Rioja Alta area. The winery is currently owned by the Osborne group and combines the experience and know-how of a family-run winery with all the resources a major company has at its disposal. Despite exemplifying the classical style, in recent years it has embarked on a process of renewal, creating more up-to-date wines.

The barrels in which its wines are aged are crafted using traditional methods. Under the strict supervision of oenologists, different types of oak and toasting are used depending on the type of wine that is desired. What is more, Montecillo owns an underground cellar which provides perfect temperature and humidity conditions for maturing its wines.

Tasting Notes

Profile sheet Montecillo 2011

Deep garnet red with ruby highlights in the rim.

Clean, intense nose with an initial sensation of notes of red fruits (blackberry and redcurrant) giving way to fine spicy hints and lightly toasted wood. Tasty, rounded with good acidity and balance of fruit on mid palate, it develops high quality tannins that give it a pleasing mouthfeel and make it long on retronasal, with the delicious notes of ageing present in the nose carrying through.

Meat and poultry dishes such as roast free-range chicken or pork chops with prunes.
