General information

A superb classic from the D.O.Ca Rioja

True to the essence of the great wines of the D.O.Ca. Rioja, this superb varietal is made chiefly from Tempranillo and bears the signature of prestigious oenologist Elena Adell.

For this Christmas season Vinoselección’s oenologists have chosen an excellent Reserva from the D.O.Ca Rioja made by the prestigious Bodega Juan Alcorta. This winery, together with Ysios and Azpilicueta, belongs to the Pernod Ricard group. It is named after its founder, Juan Alcorta Maíz, a reputed businessman from San Sebastián who set up the company 50 years ago. Located just outside Logroño and designed by Rioja architect Ignacio Quemada, a pupil of Rafael Moneo, it is a perfect combination of tradition and modern quality standards. Blending in perfectly with the setting as it is built more than 45 metres underground, it attaches great importance to utmost respect for the environment and has won major prizes for its good practices. It currently produces an extensive range of wines that are true to the classic Rioja style. Indeed, it employs a number of traditional vinification processes such as gravity flow and underground premises in its pursuit of the optimal temperature for making and ageing the wines. It is currently equipped with 70,000 barrels and is devoted exclusively to wines classified as Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. What is more, its wines are produced under the supervision of one of Spain’s most prestigious oenologists: Elena Adell.

Marqués de Villamagna Reserva 2009 is an ambassador of the great Riojas. It is made from the predominant grape variety in the D.O.Ca. Rioja, Tempranillo, together with a touch of Graciano and Mazuelo, extracting the best properties from each. Aged for more than 24 months in French and American oak barrels, it is a velvety, tasty wine with silky smooth tannins that blend in perfectly with the fruity flavours.

Tasting Notes

Profile sheet Marqués de Villamagna 2009

Gorgeous shade of ruby with subtle brick-red hues at the edge, medium intensity.

Complex, fragrant nose with aromas of jammy black fruit (blackberry) together with touches of spice (bay leaf, basil, pepper) and hints of toasted nuts, followed by pleasant reduction notes (leather and tobacco) and smoky undertones. Velvety and tasty palate with smooth tannins that blend in perfectly with the fruit. Lingering finish marked by subtle notes of cherries preserved in spirits.

This Reserva is perfect with gelatinous dishes such as pigs’ trotters stuffed with foie.
