The nineteenth century was coming to an end when a French pioneer called Charles Serres from Bordeaux, then the world wine mecca, set foot in Haro. In love with Rioja from the moment he arrived, he decided to apply his knowledge of grape growing and winemaking there and nothing has been the same ever since. Phylloxera had ravaged French vines and Spain was Europe’s great hope. Charles – already rechristened Carlos – did more than anyone else to promote exports of Rioja wine, showing local winemakers how to open up overseas markets. This region, which is now world famous, owes much to Carlos Serres, who was responsible for planting the seed that subsequently grew and converted his adopted homeland into Spain’s most prestigious Denominación de Origen. The memory of this wine man and his importance in the development of Spanish wine is powerfully present today thanks to the winery that bears his name, one of the most distinguished firms in Haro. Merci, monsieur Serre.

Carlos Serres is one of the century-old Rioja wineries that decided to embrace the trend for modernity. Carlos Serres 5 Barricas Gran Reserva 2012 is a fine, elegant wine that reflects the Atlantic character and personality of a historical terroir, Haro. It is made wholly from Tempranillo grapes and has been aged for at least 36 months in French and American oak.
