The wine we are offering you, Félix Azpilicueta Reserva 2011, is not only a tribute to this illustrious pioneer of Rioja wine but also one of the best Reservas to be found in Rioja Alta.

It furthermore belongs to a vintage that has gone down in the Denominación’s history – 2011, which is rated Excellent and regarded by many as the best of the century in this D.O. Made from Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano, it has been aged for a long period in French and American oak, making it a masterpiece of complexity and elegance.

Félix Azpilicueta is one of the most important figures in the history of Rioja wine, a forward thinker who put all the experience he had gained in Bordeaux into founding a small winery in Fuenmayor in 1881. There his prestige soon began to grow owing largely to his innovative approach. In fact, he installed the first racking system in Spain in his winery and was also a pioneer in exporting Rioja wine to countries all over the world. In the early 1990s the winery’s team of oenologists set about developing a new range of wines made from the traditional Rioja grape varieties (Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo), blending them to capture the full potential of each one. So began the Azpilicueta range – wines packed with personality and complexity that offer a full range of sensations. These wines are grown on its best vineyards located in different parts of Fuenmayor on an uneven terrain, at different altitudes and in a broad variety of soils with varied orientations, resulting in different microclimates that bring out disctinct expressions of the same grape variety.

Delicious ripe cherry-red wine with ruby hues.

Highly complex and intense nose with pleasant spicy notes of pepper, bay leaf and oregano together with notes of black fruit (blackberry, blueberry), all in perfect harmony over a dairy background, followed by balsamic (liquorice) and floral hints.

Elegant, rounded and silky palate with abundant velvety, noble tannins and a pleasant, lively acidic bite. It ends with a lingering finish in which the spicy notes of the nose carry through.
