Coveted by many winemakers, Amézola de la Mora is an impressive château with a special location in Rioja Alta. It’s one of the few Rioja wineries where all the vineyards – 60 hectares of them, which have reached full maturity – are laid out around the building, in true Bordeaux style. Señorío de Amézola Reserva 2015 is an elegant, complex red with a 92-point score from British critic Tim Atkin.

Señorío de Amézola Reserva 2015 is made from painstakingly selected grapes: 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano grown on the 60 hectares of vines surrounding the winery. It was aged for 22 months in barrels (60% American and 40% French oak) and subsequently matured to perfection for a long period in the bottle in the winery’s cellars.

The origins of this winery, located in Torre¬montalvo (Rioja Alta), date back to the nineteenth century. Following nearly a century of inactivity, in the late 1970s brothers Íñigo and Javier Amézola, great-grandsons of the founder, decided to resume winemaking. They pulled up the cereal crops that had been planted on the estate and replaced them with vines, extended the facilities by erecting another building in the same style as the old one, and dug out underground cellars where the wines are aged today. The new winery, christened Amézola de la Mora, was established in 1987 and is surrounded by 60 hectares of vineyards.

Íñigo’s widow, Cristina Downes, took over the winery in the late 1990s. And since 2005, their daughters Cristina and María Amézola Downes, the fifth generation of the family, have been carrying on the excellent work begun by their father. The firm has carried out an impressive but subtle modernisation including more moderate ageing, the introduction of French oak – as well as American – and more fruit-driven wines.

Señorío de Amézola Reserva 2015 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is ideal with meat hotpots, baby lamb chops, bean stews, and potato and meat stews.
