General information

The first signature wine in Rioja

Cosme Palacio Crianza 2013 belongs to Bodegas Palacio’s most modern range. This Crianza first came onto the market in the mid-eighties under the oenological guidance of the great Michel Rolland and can be considered one of the first signature Riojas ever to be made

Bodegas Palacio (1894) is one of the firms with the longest history in Rioja Alavesa and one that has most successfully adapted to the new times. Cosme Palacio Crianza 2013 is a good example of Bodegas Palacio’s knowhow. Complex, big and fresh, it is made from Tempranillo grapes and has been aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

Bodegas Palacio was established in Laguardia in 1894 by Cosme Palacio, a well-known Bilbao businessman and politician who unwittingly revolutionised the Rioja wine sector. After studying oenology at Montpellier and with oenologist Txomin Garramiola, Cosme Palacio moved to Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid) to carry on experimenting. Years later he returned to Rioja to put into practice the Bordeaux winemaking techniques he had learned in France, while Txomin Garramiola remained in Valladolid to run the Vega Sicilia winery.

In the 1980s Bodegas Palacio decided to go about modernising their winemaking practices with the aid of one of the best oenologists in the world: Frenchman Michel Rolland. Rolland designed a new red which was named after the winery’s founder: Cosme Palacio, which became the first signature wine in Rioja. Bodegas Palacio was acquired by the powerful Hijos de Antonio Barceló group in 1998, becoming one of the most modern Rioja wineries.

Cosme Palacio Crianza 2013 is ideal with red meats, mature cheeses, macaroni with Bolognese sauce and stewed lentils.
