General information

A Rioja that makes an impression

Juan Bautista García is one of those young winemakers determined to instil their love of wine in new generations. In 2008 he relaunched the family’s Rioja winery with the aim of creating different, modern and predominantly fruity wines: moreish, highly drinkable wines like Paco García Crianza 2014.

Why don’t my friends drink wine? The question had been bugging Juan Bautista García, the son and grandson of Riojan vintners. Determined to find a way of passing on his passion to the new generations, in 2008 he took the helm of the family winery in Murillo de Río Leza (La Rioja) in order to steer it in a new direction. His aim: to create different, modern wines that appeal to young consumers such as Paco García Crianza 2014.

Paco García Crianza 2014 is made from Tempranillo with a touch of Garnacha. The grapes come from three 30-year-old vineyards located a few kilometres from Logroño in the central part of La Rioja at an altitude of between 400 and 500 metres. The wine underwent unconventional ageing: in only French oak barrels (for 12 months). Expressive nose with prominent aromas of black fruit, highly balanced palate, tasty, big and full. Ideal with stews, lamb chops and pasta dishes.

The philosophy of Bodegas Paco García is to make drinkable wines that are moreish and fruity and less oaky. The first vintage was released in 2011 and soon met with the approval of consumers and critics alike (the firm’s Beautiful Things was awarded 92 points by the prestigious Decanter magazine).

Bodegas Paco García make their wines from grapes grown on their 46 hectares of vineyards (25 hectares inherited from the family and the rest purchased in recent years). The vines are distributed among 7 estates a few kilometres away from Logroño. Their wines are aged almost exclusively in French oak – this is less common in Rioja – and their facilities boast original vats in the shape of upside-down truncated cones designed by the winery to enhance the colour and structure of the wines. They combine technology and tradition (the hand printed on the label and on the cork is a reference to manual vineyard and winemaking practices).
