General information

A signature wine that is enjoying success on the US market

Solanera Viñas Viejas 2015, aged for 10 months in oak barrels, is a signature wine created by Castaño more than a decade ago to corner the American market – and it has certainly succeeded.

Solanera, made by Bodegas Castaño, never fails to delight international critics vintage after vintage. In fact, Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate has awarded it scores of over 90 points several times (94 in 2012, for example). Solanera Viñas Viejas 2015 is a coupage of Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha Tintorera that has been aged for 10 months in oak barrels.

This Mediterranean red is notable for its excellent ageing in oak. Intense nose with aromas of ripe black fruit, hints of toast and cocoa and pleasant balsamic and floral notes. Tasty, very balanced palate with a full, silky mouthfeel.

The D.O. Yecla has carved out a niche for itself abroad and now cornering the Spanish market thanks to the quality of its reds made from Monastrell, the star grape of eastern Spain. A key winery always springs to mind in connection with this Denominación in Murcia: Bodegas Castaño. A spearhead in the region, fifty years ago Bodegas Castaño was the first project started up by one of the most important winemaking families in the country.

Solanera 2015 (D.O. Yecla) is perfect with red meats such as beef tenderloin with mustard and red wine sauce. Also excellent with dishes made from winged game, such as stewed pigeon with mushrooms and truffles or magret duck breast in cranberry sauce.

Very ripe cherry-red with very deep garnet hues at the edge, very good intensity.

The nose displays powerful notes of ripe jammy black fruit (blueberries and plums), followed by delicate hints of toast which blend perfectly with the subtle cocoa undertones and pleasant balsamic notes; aromatic finish with floral notes.

Tasty palate with superb balance between acidity, body and alcohol. Ripe, sweet, high-quality tannins give it a full, silky mouthfeel. Good weight of ripe fruit on mid-palate, with excellent ageing in oak barrels. Long finish marked by hints of cherries in liquor.
